On India's Freedom Struggle
The British got a foothold in India in the year 1600, and they gradually made inroads in this ancient land, taking control of a number of facets of the indigenous society. The first armed insurrection against British domination occurred in 1817, named the Paika Rebellion. Another major uprising against British rule in India took hold in 1857–1858. This was a serious effort by the Indians to expel the British from their homeland, as several towns were seized by force of arms.
